WHAT IS GATE ?


The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India Examination Administered and conducted jointly by Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore & Seven Indian Institute of Technology (Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Rookie) on behalf of the National Coordinating Board-Gate Department of Education Ministry, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India in every year in the month of January/February. The gate examination is conducted through eight zones across the country by the Gate Committee comprising representative from administering institutes.

The GATE score/Rank is used for admissions to Post graduate Programmes (ME, M.Tech, MS, direct PhD) in IISc, IITs and other prestigious Institutes / Universities in India, with financial assistance provided by MHRD. The GATE Score may also be used by PSUs for recruitment of candidates for prestigious jobs with attractive salary packages. Some of the PSUs which use GATE score for providing jobs include BARC, BHEL, IOCL, HPCL, NTPC, Power Grid, NHPC etc. GATE exam primarily tests the comprehensive understanding of the candidate in various undergraduate subjects in Engineering. The GATE score reflects the relative performance level in a particular branch. GATE score is valid for three years.

In GATE examination, candidates can apply for only one of the 23 papers which will be conducted by an online computer based test (CBT) .Candidates are expected to appear in a paper appropriate to the discipline of their qualifying degree. However, candidates are free to choose any paper according to their admission plan, keeping in mind the eligibility criteria of the institutions in which they wish to seek admission. Gate Eligibility


The Candidates with following academic background are eligible to appear in Examination
1. Bachelor’s degree holder Engineering/Technology/Architecture/Pharmacy (4 Years after 10+2) and those who are in the final or Pre-final year of such Programmes.
2. Master’s degree holder in any branch of Science/Mathematics/Statistics/Computer Application or equivalent and those who are in the final or Pre-final year of such Programmes.
3. Candidates in the Second or higher year of the Four-Year Integrated Master’s degree programmes (Post-B.sc.)in Engineering/Technology or in the third or higher year of Five-Year integrated Master’s degree program and dual degree programme in Engineering/Technology.
4. Candidates with Qualification obtained through examinations conducted by professional societies recognised by UPSC/AICTE/(e.g AMIE) as equivalent TO B.E/B.tech. Those who have completed Section A or equivalent of such professional courses and training are also eligible.
